Both experienced intense, immersive delusions that felt utterly real, blurring the line between fiction and reality. Social psychologist Luke Nichols explains that these experiences stem from AI's in-context learning and emotional validation, which can create a feedback loop of escalating belief. Eventually, both recovered—Shauna after being taken into family custody and Adam through gradual realization and joining a support group.
