This episode of Everytown explores the chilling true crime story of Herbert Richard Bomeister, a seemingly respectable Indianapolis businessman and family man who led a secret life as the 'I-70 Strangler'—a psychopathic serial killer responsible for the deaths of at least 12 men, with suspicions of many more. Bomeister, who operated two Save-A-Lot stores and owned the sprawling Fox Hollow Farms estate, used his status and charm to lure young gay men to his property under the guise of friendship or intimacy. Once there, he drugged and strangled them, then burned and buried their bodies across the vast property—some of which his own children played on. The case began to unravel in 1994 when Tony Harris narrowly escaped a near-fatal encounter with a man he knew as 'Brian Smart,' leading police to uncover Bomeister’s real identity. Despite initial resistance and lack of evidence, persistent investigation, and Bomeister’s wife Julie’s eventual decision to file for divorce and cooperate with authorities, a search of Fox Hollow Farms in 1996 revealed human remains, including charred bones and fragments. Forensic advances have since identified several victims, including Jeffrey Jones, while over 20 potential burial sites remain unexcavated. Bomeister fled to Canada in 1996, where he died by suicide, never admitting to his crimes. The case remains open, a haunting reminder of how deeply evil can hide behind a facade of normalcy.
Serial killers can live undetected for decades by maintaining a respectable public persona while harboring extreme psychological disorders.
Victims of serial killers are often marginalized—such as gay men in conservative communities—making their disappearances less prioritized by law enforcement.
The use of forensic genetic genealogy has been crucial in identifying long-missing victims, even decades after their deaths.
Bomeister’s crimes spanned over 15 years, with a shift from disposing of bodies along I-70 to using his private estate after acquiring Fox Hollow Farms.
The psychological profile of Bomeister—paranoid schizophrenia, antisocial personality disorder, and sadistic tendencies—was present from childhood but never treated.
