In this special episode of Wake N Jake, hosts Jake and Wake welcome back legendary baseball analyst Edith Jolly, known as Foolish Bailey, to review and defend his 2026 Foolish 50 list just five games into the season. The conversation dives deep into the rationale behind key picks, particularly the controversial snubs of Will Smith and Hunter Green, and the high rankings of breakout players like Cal Raleigh, Cattell Marte, and Wyatt Lankford. Bailey emphasizes a shift toward valuing per-inning dominance, underlying metrics, and long-term upside over traditional volume and consensus. He defends his approach to catchers, arguing that Cal Raleigh’s historic 2025 season—combined with elite defense—deserves top-10 consideration even if he doesn’t repeat 60 homers. The hosts explore the volatility of the catcher position, the impact of small sample sizes, and the growing talent depth in the current rookie class. They also reflect on how modern players are more accustomed to elite velocity, signaling a generational shift in baseball development. The episode closes with Bailey’s excitement about the future, especially the shortstop prospects emerging in the minors, and a heartfelt appreciation for the joy of baseball analysis. Key takeaways include: 1) Underlying metrics and long-term upside should outweigh short-term stats when ranking players; 2) Positional scarcity and defensive excellence can elevate players beyond raw offensive output; 3) The 2026 rookie class shows unprecedented depth and power, potentially reshaping the game for years; 4) Catcher performance is more volatile than ever, making elite defensive catchers with elite offense rare and valuable; 5) The modern player is more accustomed to high velocity, reducing the 'overmatch' effect at the major league level. The overall tone is enthusiastic, intellectually curious, and deeply passionate about baseball’s evolving landscape.

Defending the 2026 Foolish 50: Methodology & Shifts
“I'm trying to get there with the pitching as well. But the thing is with the pitching, there is better data out there in general on pitchers, things like the Eno-Seras Stuff Plus models than I can come up with. But I'm trying to sort of at least have my own data available. It's almost like a second opinion from a doctor, right? I like that. Baseball Internet doctors.”
Controversial Snubs: Will Smith & Hunter Green
“I just could not come up with a way for him to be at least in my eyes, a top 50 player in the league, even though he hit really well last year and he plays like a premium position. And that's kind of hard to deal with for me because that's generally the key for me, right? If you hit really well and playing up the middle position, you're going to rank very highly on this list most of the time. But with Will Smith, it ended up being somewhat of an exception.”
Breakout Players: Cal Raleigh & Cattell Marte
“I think a great comp to it, actually, is Bobby Witt Jr. Because in 2024... Bobby Witt Jr. had a historically great offensive season for a shortstop, and we all said that was incredible. Maybe that's the high watermark. The result was also the same in the sense that he was the MVP runner-up to Judge. And then what did Bobby Witt Jr. do last year? He regressed quite a bit offensively, and he was still an eight-war player, and he was still very obviously the third best player in baseball. So that's what I think could be what happens with Cal this year, and it would almost still make him like... underrated.”
The Catcher Conundrum & Player Volatility
The hosts explore the unique volatility of the catcher position, using examples like Cal Raleigh, William Contreras, and Adley Rutschman to illustrate how quickly a player’s value can shift.
